A World Without Trucking

Hailed as the beating heart of the US economy and the backbone of logistics, the colossal trucking industry has been earning $732.3 billion in revenue for the past 2020 up until present which continuously grows & is projected to rise by the end of 2022.

However, as frequent as how trucks are seen roll on our highways, on the other hand, is just as seldom as it is pondered upon on how the whole industry places an impact on our everyday lives.

So, the question is - What will unfold if they disappear?

In 24 Hours

Major problems will arise even within a short span of time without transportation. In a day, gas stations would be affected instantly. Tanks will eventually run low on availability as busiest fuel stations project sales between 200,000-300,000 gallons monthly which requires countless daily deliveries for this demand to be satisfied. Since fuel shortage takes a toll on almost every economical aspect in a domino effect, automobile travel will make trips to groceries, doctor’s appointments, bank, work, and other personal errands on another level of difficulty. Medical supply deliveries and ambulance services will also be bruised, therefore decelerating the operations of clinics, hospitals, and health centers. From US mails and packages to garbage collection among other things, a 24-hour absence of trucking services will leave the country almost paralyzed.

In 2-3 Days

As transportation gap increases, it will lead to one problem after another. It won’t take long for gas station stocks to reach its depletion stage and cause soaring prices. With the scarcity of fuel, public safety is not impossible to be positioned in jeopardy as fire trucks, emergency ambulance and police vehicles won’t be able to function without. Not to mention garbage & sanitation trucks that will be left stagnant creating a massive waste pile-up that may become breeding grounds for pests and bacteria or worse, infectious diseases and toxic contamination from medical wastes that will not assure a safe living environment for all. In a normal estimate, one would not assume that more than a day would cause such great impact right away, but reality is that food shortages will begin to rise dramatically leading to hoarding and panic buying. That applies the same to exhaustion of banks and ATM cash resources, as well as giant manufacturers that rely on parts and component deliveries on a day-to-day basis.

In a Week

Similar industries such as railroad transport & cargo container ships will be stand-still on their respective dockyards as there are no goods to move. People won’t be able to go to their jobs because of lack of fuel in both private and public/commuter utility vehicles that would then cause damage to the labor aspect due to workforce shortage. This will also cease operations of manufacturers therefore no new productions will take place, and retailers concurrently would be overwhelmed by record-breaking inventory turnover ratio as consumers had already begun stocking up that even the basic access to clean drinking water will soon cut back.

In a Month

One does not have to be excellent in math when presented with the addition of food & medicine shortages, to every household’s mountain of garbage, to scarcity of potable drinking water in an already incapacitated condition of public safety & healthcare in order to understand the level of crisis and severity of risks that is about to happen. Now, people are already desperate at survival since the country is left dormant because of truck stoppage and that every ounce of supply are long-gone replenished. It truly reveals that our daily lives are totally dependent on consistent movement that it is unimaginable to function without trucking services.

Now that we know the worst-case scenarios, it is harsh to fathom that the country would be completely crippled if left without the trucking industry. In evidence, it fills an extremely major role economically that’s why America’s flow orbits around it. Every single dispatcher and their truck driver on the road maintain businesses and lives sustained. Our activities and the industries that we have are linked in ways we rarely recognize, but one minimal change could greatly put the rest at stake.

Optimistically, this subject will bring a redeemed appreciation for the logistics workforce, especially truck drivers. The littlest of things that we take for granted would be considered long-gone luxuries without them.
